Relations with twinned cities constitute the basis for Amiens’ international cooperation. There are 4 twinned cities and a strengthened cooperation agreement. Historically speaking, Amiens has twinned with the German cities of Dortmund and Görlitz, but also Darlington, a city in the north of England. New partnerships have subsequently been formed, notably with Tulsa, a city in Oklahoma, USA.
The origin of the twinning
Twinning in our urban area is a result of either the wishes of a community or the commitment of associations. These historical agreements have also come out of economic activity similar to that with cities that Amiens has twinned with or has had exchange projects with. With the success of these initial contacts, Amiens has demonstrated its interest in cooperating with its twinned cities and continues to forge cooperation agreements with them. Anglo-Saxon culture will be celebrated in 2013, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the twinning agreement with Darlington. Of course the year will be marked by a number of events with a ‘So British’ theme. On 20th June 2013, all of our twinned cities will be invited to celebrate the occasion in the square of the City Hall. Many cultural events will take place during the festivities (the famous Zic Zazou should take part in this big festival). To top it all, the festival in the city will take place at the same time as the festivities in the northern quarter. On this occasion, in the context of an exchange between IREAM, a catering school in Amiens, and its English equivalent in Darlington, French and English apprentices will take part in this event by exhibiting their skills at a demonstration and tasting workshop.
American culture will also be celebrated with the next Amiens International Film Festival which will have the theme « Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cinema », an ambitious project in 2013, year dedicated to Anglo-Saxon culture. A lot of films have been shot in Oklahoma State in the past, and its eclectic “cinema” is still vibrant today. Factors that contributed to their success include ‘folklore’, the culture, the unique landscapes of the area, American Indian films, and Larry Clarke’s influence on new Hollywood filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola.
New challenges around enhanced cooperation
Amiens is currently faced with new challenges: stimulate cooperation with its twinned cities and capitalise on its energy to establish new partnerships. In this vein, the active cooperation between the Ukrainian city of Lviv and Amiens has led to the validation of an ‘enhanced dialogue’ in 2010. Last but not least, numerous initiatives between the Amiens association « Les Deux Rives » and Morocco have led to the signature of a declaration of intention between Amiens, Driouch Province and the city of Nador.
Other metropolitan twinning
Certain twinning committees are particularly active in the urban area, in particular Longueau, Sains en Amiénois, Saint-Fuscien, Dury, Rivery, and Saleux. These associations have set up numerous activities (trips, language courses, cultural exchanges) with Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldavia, Bulgaria… These twinnings, on a more or less international level, are the result of professional relationships between people, who have sometimes gone on to form long-lasting friendships.
