The Jules Verne Collection

“People know that I used to go the Société Industrielle d’Amiens (Amiens Industrial Society) library every day, where I found inspiration for my novels. However, I found Amiens Library on Rue de la République just as interesting. As a city councillor, I was part of the “Amiens Library Book Inspection and Purchasing Committee” from 1888 to 1904. In 1895, I donated 40 volumes of my works to the library.”

The Library and Jules Verne converged again in 2000, when Amiens Métropole acquired the Gondolo della Riva collection, which focussed on the writer, his work and how it was received around the world. The collection is housed in this building and is made up of nearly 20,000 documents and items, including, correspondence between Jules Verne and the publisher Jules Hetzel, a number of the author’s manuscripts including his travel journals, and personal items, such as his writing desk and globe.

This collection is the foundation for the permanent exhibition at the House of Jules Verne, where approximately 800 artefacts are on display.
